Mother’s Day is a holiday and designated as the second Sunday of May announced by President of United States Woodrow Wilson in 1914. Mother’s Day is to honoring motherhood as well as the mother of the family. It complements similar celebrations honoring family members such as Sibling’s Day, children’s day, Father’s Day, and Grandparents Day.
History of Mother’s Day
Anna Reeves Jarvis credited as a founding lady of this Mother’s Day and this day began from the United States America (USA). Anna Reeves Jarvis started “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” years before the Civil War to teach local women’s/mother’s how to properly care for their children’s. Mother’s day work clubs later became a unifying force in a region still divided over the Civil War.
Anna Reeves Jarvis organized an event known as “Mothers’ Friendship Day,” in 1868 at which mothers Confederate and gathered soldiers to promote reconciliation.
Another predecessor to Mother’s Day came from the abolitionist “Julia Ward Howe”. In 1870 Julie Ward Howe wrote the “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” a call to action that asked mothers to become one sole in promoting world peace. In 1873 Howe campaigned for a “Mother’s Peace Day” to be celebrated every year on June 2.
Anna Jarvis
The official Mother’s Day holiday arose in the 19th Century as a result of the efforts and hard work of Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis. Following her mother’s 1905 death, Anna Jarvis conceived of Mother’s Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices every mother made for their children. Ann Reeves Jarvis took great pain and gain her role as “Mother of Mother’s Day”.
After the success of her first Mother’s Day in May 1908, Jarvis remained un-married and childless whole life happy to see an honorary holiday added to the national calendar. She also started a massive letter-writing campaign to newspapers and to politicians for the adoption of a special day honoring motherhood named “Mother’s Day”.
In 1912 many states had adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday, and Jarvis had established the International Mother’s Day Association to help and promote her cause. Her hard work pays off in 1914 when US President Woodrow Wilson officially announced a national holiday on the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
Did you know? More phone calls and messages are made on Mother’s Day than any day of the year. Mother’s Day holiday chats with Mom often cause phone traffic to spike by as much as 40 percent.
Mother’s Day (Worldwide)
Mother’s Day is celebrated worldwide, however, traditions depend on the country. Worldwide and especially in the United States, Mother’s Day continues to be celebrated by presenting mothers with presents and flowers, and it has become one of the biggest holidays.
Families also celebrate by giving mothers a day off from their daily routine activities like cooking or other household chores and spend a whole day with mothers etc.
Another Mother’s Day celebration can be found in Ethiopia, where Ethiopian families gather to sing songs and eat a large feast as part of Antrosht, a multi-day celebration Mother’s Day and honoring motherhood.
